Do you save more gas in a higher gear or a lower gear?
Filed Under Maintenance & Repairs | 6 Comments
I always hear talk about people with manual transmissions save more gas than people with automatic cars. I have the old school manual. Not this new stuff where there is no clutch. I have a clutch on mine the old school stick shift. Anyway, I’ve been trying to save gas. Do I burn more gas in a higher gear or a lower gear. Where should I keep the RPM’s when I’m driving in the higher or lower gear at that as well? Example. It redlines at 9000 RPMS. I’m trying to save gas. Should I have it halfway driving in that particular gear, and should I be driving in a high or low gear so I don’t burn as much gas?

Is it bad for my transmission if I shift into a high gear while habing the speed and RPMs low to save gas?
Filed Under Maintenance & Repairs | 7 Comments
I ask because my friend who was in the passenger seat saw me shift into 4th gear while I was only going 40 kilometers(dont know what it is is in miles, maybe 28 or so?). He made the comment that I’m going to ruin my transmission going to such a high gear with the speed that low. I do this normally just to watch my speed and to save gas, is this bad? Should I indeed shift when the RPMs hit around 3? Thanks in advance for everyones input.

I heard from someone that keeping the car in neutral while waiting at a stop light saves gas. (if it does work, would it be beneficial to put the fot on the brakes) Is this true? I have a 02 accord V6.

Is it okay to constantly shift into neutral and let your car coast in order to save gas?

I’ve found myself constantly shifting my automatic car into neutral and just letting it coast whenever I can in order to save gas. Is this an effective technique or can I ruin my car that way?

I have an automatic 2001 Oldsmobile Intrigue. If I put the car in neutral while driving does it save gas? Also, does it hurt my car if a switch from neutral to drive frequently while driving?
