gasoline
machman4 asked:

I’m doing a science project on combustion of different grades of gasoline, but can’t seem to find anything on what percent of it is octane. I found one site, but it was contradicting saying (for example) 87 gas was 87% octane, but then says that the 87 is a compression rating. Anyone know how to find the percent of octane in a fuel?
I know that. What I need to find out IS the percentage of octane. If anyone knows, help!

octane rating isn’t the percent of octane. it is a ratio of detonation resistance to that of iso-octane. Ie, the fuels tendency to burn as smoothly as iso-octane, rather than to explode.

    read about it here

as to the chemicals in gasoline, they are many. benzene, toluene, ethanol, MTBE, etc

    **** update ****
the concentration of isooctane varies and is independant of the octane rating.

87 octane gas does not mean it’s 87 % octane

1 gallon of 87 octane will contain a different % octane than a different gallon of 87 octane

    look here

2,2,4 trimethylpentane is isooctane. the % isooctane can vary between APPROXIMATELY 0 to 30%.

ok? there is NO WAY to take an octane rating off the pump and calculate the % isooctane in the gas.
