I’d really like to know!
Hi, I’d just like to say that I meant to put “stop light” obviously there isn’t enough time to be switching gears at a stop sign.

At a STOP SIGN? How long do you stop? Seriously though if you can coast to the sign or stop lights then put it in neutral. Yes that will save some gas because it cuts off the gas(put the car in gear without hitting the gas and see how the car moves). If you are just stopping at a stop sign for the moment to check for traffic then you aren’t using enough gas to be worth doing.
Not only does it not save on gas but it’s also very dangerous. In fact I’m pretty sure it’s illegal in most states. You never know when you need to make a sudden move in an emergency and you can’t do that with the car in neutral.
To the guy above, putting the car in neutral does not cut the gas, in fact it puts the car in idle which uses a surprising amount of gas. Being in gear with the foot off the gas uses less gas, especially when coasting down hill or to a stop. Compression helps keep the engine turning so it doesn’t need as much gas to keep running.
Actually it doesn’t save anything at all. The car is still running and the idle speed is pretty much the same whether the car is in drive or in neutral, so no you are not saving anything measurable.
It does not stop the gas because the car is still running. It needs gas to continue to run, and turning it off and restarting it every time will waste a great deal of gas plus annoy all those around you waiting for you to get moving. So basically as long as the car is running it is using gas.
Shifting into neutral in an automatic will cancel fuel cutoff, so it’s actually better to remain in gear and let the drive wheels pull the engine airflow down to where fuel cutoff can be enabled or where fuel flow is minimized.
Not to mention, shifting into neutral takes away the driver’s ability to accelerate instantly in a sudden emergency–it’s just not safe.
I’m sorry, but the answer is no, it doesn’t save any gas to put it in neutral at a light, actually it uses more because the engine rpms go up in neutral. You want to keep the engine rpms as low as possible to save gas..
First of all, it’s not illegal to put your car in neutral. Manual drivers do it all the time.
It probably doesn’t save much gas because the engine is still running, but it does save some. The best way to save gas at really long lights, train crossings and bad traffic is to turn off the engine.
Putting the car in neutral should save a little gas I know our manual car saved alot but it would also depend if its manual or automatic.
Why would you do it at a stop sign?
at a stop sign
your idiling
same with neutral, it goes to idle speed
therefor, you wont be saving any gas at all
if you drive an automotive
put it in D and leave it
stop messing with it people..
